Media Impact

Media has been blamed for a lot of things that people portray as being "too violent" or "not a good influence for children". A couple of those examples are video games that this generation plays today. Games like Grand Theft Auto or Mortal Kombat have been criticized a lot over decades with accusations that kids are being influenced by these games. Another media that has been criticized a lot is music. Music has been the main source of peoples everyday lives. They listen to music to relieve stress, to control emotions, and just to have fun. There are many types of music and besides Hip Hop/Rap, there is also Heavy Metal that has been blamed for everyday problems. One that stands out to me is the legendary Heavy Metal artist, Ozzy Osbourne.
Ozzy Osbourne has been an icon on this genre of music. His music consists with talking about being rebellious and having a dark vibe on his music. With being rebellious and having those lyrics that talk about "black figures in shadows" one would blame his music to be dangerous to kids. An article I have found talks about this and Ozzy Osbourne as well as a couple of others in this genre of music. The title of the article is Devil Music and the Great Beast: Ozzy Osbourne, Aleister Crowley, and The Christian Right   By Christopher M. Moreman. This long article consists of his accusations of what this genre of music is harmful to children and Christians a like. According to Moreman, if a person listens to Heavy Metal they are likely to be doing crimes. "Crimes rooted in devil worship are escalating nation-wide. Teenagers and adolescents are most often involved and heavy metal music serves as a catalyst for their involvement." He goes on to say that Ozzy Osbourne took on the role of "The Devil's Agent" because of his actions while on stage promoting sex, drugs and alcohol.

  1. Good example. In the Recordings chapter, we'll look at the history of music being called "devil's music." It goes way back.
